Heavy Elements and Electromagnetic Transients from Neutron Star Mergers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Compact binary mergers involving neutron stars can eject a fraction of their mass to space. Being extremely rich, this material undergoes rapid capture nucleosynthesis, and the resulting radioactivity powers fast, short-lived electromagnetic transients known as kilonova or macronova. Such are exciting probes most extreme physical conditions observation signals enrichment Universe with heavy elements. Here current understanding ejection mechanisms, properties ejecta, radioactive reviewed. The first well-observed event in aftermath GW170817 delivered wealth insights, but much today's picture such events is still based on patchwork theoretical studies. Apart from summarizing understanding, questions where no consensus has been reached yet also pointed out, possible directions for future research sketched. In an appendix, publicly available heating rate library WinNet nuclear reaction network described, simple fit formula alleviate implementation hydrodynamic simulations provided.

Binary Neutron Star Mergers
We review the current status of studies of the coalescence of binary neutron star systems. We begin with a discussion of the formation channels of merging binaries and we discuss the most recent theoretical predictions for merger rates. Next, we turn to the quasi-equilibrium formalisms that are used to study binaries prior to the merger phase and to generate initial data for fully dynamical sim...
متن کاملGamma-ray Bursts from Neutron Star Mergers
Binary neutron stars merger (NSM) at cosmological distances is probably the only γ-ray bursts model based on an independently observed phenomenon which is known to be taking place at a comparable rate. We describe this model, its predictions and some open questions. Cosmological γ-Ray Bursts and Fireballs Compton-GRO has demonstrated, quite convincingly, that γ-ray bursts (grbs) originate from ...
متن کاملTransient Events from Neutron Star Mergers
Mergers of neutron stars (NS+NS) or neutron stars and stellar mass black holes (NS+BH) eject a small fraction of matter with a sub-relativistic velocity. Upon rapid decompression nuclear density medium condenses into neutron rich nuclei, most of them radioactive. Radioactivity provides a long term heat source for the expanding envelope. A brief transient has the peak luminosity in the supernova...
متن کاملMergers of neutron star black hole binaries with small mass ratios: nucleosynthesis, gamma-ray bursts and electromagnetic transients
I discuss simulations of the coalescence of black hole neutron star binary systems with black hole masses between 14 and 20 M⊙. The calculations use a threedimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, a temperature-dependent, nuclear equation of state and a multi-flavor neutrino scheme. General relativistic effects are mimicked using the Paczyński -Wiita pseudo-potential and gravitational ...
متن کاملHydrodynamics of Neutron Star Mergers
The final burst of gravitational radiation emitted by coalescing binary neutron stars carries direct information about the neutron star fluid, and, in particular, about the equation of state of nuclear matter at extreme densities. The final merger may also be accompanied by a detectable electromagnetic signal, such as a gamma-ray burst. In this paper, we summarize the results of theoretical wor...
